The Plain Truth about Herbert W Armstrong visit with Haile Selassie I:Doctrine of Balaam and Nicolaitans Revealed Laodicea Admonished by The Amen

Herbert W Armstrong was an influential and charismatic church leader who founded The Worldwide Church of God and Ambassador College, to globally propagate his doctrine of British Imperialism, through his version of Anglo-European dominated Christianity. Mr. Armstrong was under the delusion that the Ancient Solomonic Dynasty was divinely preordained to be finally re-established through the British Monarchy’s “jewish” bloodline (see The United States and Britain in Prophecy, Armstrong, H. W., 1954). His conviction becomes apparent during an interview when H.I.M. Haile Selassie I afforded Mr. Armstrong audience, in the following excerpt: “Then I mentioned that I have the genealogy of my ancestry, and that I too, am a direct descendant of King Solomon of ancient Israel. “Well why not?” blurted out the Emperor spontaneously, without waiting for the interpreter to tell him what I had said. At that responsive quip WE ALL BURST OUT IN LAUGHTER. From that point the interpreter had very little to do.” (The Plain Truth, pg 38, Dec. 1973) H.I.M. Wherein lies the evil of Mr. Armstrong’s mentality may not be so much due to his lack of historically accurate biblical references (for The Throne of David to be established anywhere except Ethiopia, absolutely disqualifying Britain and the United States) but the fact that he and many in his ministry subscribed to the lie of white supremacy and incorporated it’s atrocity into their counterfeit gospel. Whether or not these missionaries were under the influence of political motives or mere victims of spiritual blindness the author doesn’t know. Nonetheless, the damage of this false ideology has done an extreme amount of damage by turning souls away from the true Gospel of Salvation, due to a lack of truth in it’s preaching. If intentional, this would be nothing less than practicing the doctrine of Balaam? (Βαλαάμ I.Balaam meaning “perhaps”
A native of Pethor a city in Mesopotamia, endued by Yahweh with prophetic power. He was hired by Balak to curse the Israelites; and influenced by the love of reward, he wished to gratify Balak; but he was compelled by Jehovah’s power to bless them. Hence later the Jews saw him as a most abandoned deceiver/Balaam is the typical hireling prophet, seeking only to make a market of his gift. This is “the way of Balaam” 2 Peter 2:15 and characterizes false teachers. The “error” of Balaam” Jude 1:11 was that he could see only the natural morality–a holy God, he reasoned, must curse such a people as Israel. Like all false teachers he was ignorant of the higher morality of vicarious atonement, by which God could be just and yet the justifier of believing sinners Romans 3:26 . The “doctrine of Balaam” Revelation 2:14 refers to his teaching Balak to corrupt the people whom he could not curse ; Numbers 31:16 ; 25:1-3 ; James 4:4 . Perhaps, Mr. Armstrong, being not well studied in Proverbs, was unaware as H.I.M. subtly made it known that one’s works are not hidden and proceed them as noted in the subsequent excerpt “Early in our talk, His Majesty mentioned THAT HE WAS WELL AWARE, as were the others in the Ethiopian government, that I was the spiritual leader of a large worldwide following. During the first fifteen or twenty minutes of our meeting, he tended to answer whatever I said with a philosophical observation, apparently inspired by Solomon’s Proverbs, which I rather deduced he has studied continuously and religiously.” (The Plain Truth, pg 38, Dec. 1973)

On the other hand, Mr. Armstrong did publicly champion many crucial issues plaguing humanity according to basic Christian principles. Yet, the question remains: did Herbert W. Armstrong live according to these principles in both Word and Deed?/Spirit and Truth?, or did he truly hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans? (Νικολαΐτης Nikolaïtēs I.Nicolaitans = “destruction of people” A. a sect mentioned in Rev. 2:6,15, who were charged with holding the error of Balaam, casting a stumbling block before the church of God by upholding the liberty of eating things sacrificed to idols as well as committing fornication)

The following testimonies present evidence that is quite revealing.
“For a number of years Garner Ted Armstrong kept the information to himself. But Dorothy did not She divulged the same information to many others including David Antion (Garner Ted Armstrong’s brother-in-law) and Lois Chapman (who had been married to the late Richard Armstrong, Ted’s older brother).
Dorothy’s story as related to Ted and others was that Herbert had begun fondling and heavy petting her in 1933 when she was thirteen years old, around the same time that Herbert W. Armstrong now claims God was using him to found the modern era of the only true church. But he did not begin to go “all the way” with her until three years later. One day Dorothy returned home from a date with a young bank teller to inform her father that she had just been “half-raped.” To her surprise, Herbert was actually “elated” over the news. Herbert decided it was time to show her how it was really done. From then on Herbert went “all the way.” The year was 1936; Dorothy was 16 years old. Strangely, Dorothy has claimed that Herbert later went on to become a good friend of the bank teller.
The incestuous relationship went on for years, but it was apparently not mutually enjoyable. Dorothy has related to friends how on one occasion in a hotel room she so strongly protested Herbert’s abuse that the manager knocked on the door and asked what the reason was for all the noise. Herbert was quick to inform him that his “young bride” was a bit uncooperative due to inexperience. Satisfied with the alibi, the manager left. Dorothy has claimed that Herbert then overpowered her, and after tying her to the bed and gagging her, proceeded to rape her. It’s a pity Herbert neglected to include this incident in his book God Speaks Out on the New Morality.
During those years, besides taking her on supposedly church or ministry-related business trips, it was not uncommon for Herbert to take Dorothy out dancing on Friday nights. On one such occasion she asked him if he ever worried that one of his church members would see them. He told her no, because, in effect, they were too stupid to be out dancing on Friday night and that he had them well-trained (in keeping the Friday sunset to Saturday sunset Sabbath).
These incidents were but a part of the awful truth Dorothy related to Garner Ted and others. In spite of church upheavals, arguments with his father, personal emotional problems and considerable notoriety about his own sins, Ted said nothing about his father’s shameful past. Not until 1978………The last meeting between Garner Ted Armstrong and his father in 1978 was not the only time Herbert W. Armstrong confessed to the incest allegation. In 1980 Henry Cornwall, then an aide to Herbert W. Armstrong, read the Robinson book soon after it appeared and asked HWA directly if the chapter on incest was accurate. Herbert W. Armstrong told him it was. He then instructed Cornwall that his wife Ramona was not to see the book or learn of the incest story. Unfortunately for Herbert, Ramona already had a copy of the book and was in the next room listening to the Cornwall-Herbert W. Armstrong discussion. Shortly thereafter, she too confronted Herbert W. Armstrong about the incest allegation. And once again, Herbert admitted it was true, but begged and pleaded with Ramona not to let this fact get in the way of their marriage. The cause of the problem, he said, had been Loma, his first wife. Considering the perversity of Herbert’s past, is it any wonder Ramona’s love would begin to wane?” (The Ambassador Report #27, 1997)

Apparently, as demonstrated in the next excerpt of The Plain Truth interview, H.I.M. Haile Selassie I was already well acquainted with Mr. Armstrong’s “way”, yet graciously H.I.M. subtly admonishing Mr. Armstrong’s infirmity and calls him to repentance “He took keen interest in my explanation of the two divergent philosophies or ways-of-life, which I call the way of “GET” practiced in this world, and the way of “GIVE” which leads to peace, happiness and success. ‘Philosophy, and moral philosophy,” he commented, “is commendable, BUT IT IS FAR MORE COMMENDABLE TO PUT INTO ACTUAL PRACTICE the principles upon which the philosophy is based.” He said HE FULLY RECOGNIZED OUR ACHIEVEMENTS of BOTH OUR INSTITUTIONS putting into practice THE WAY that we preach worldwide.(The Plain Truth, pg. 38, Dec. 1973)
The conclusion of The Plain Truth article is quite amusing in that the context reveals Mr. Armstrong’s conscience seems to have become a bit heavy. Nevertheless, H.I.M. Haile Selassie I demonstrates not merely the wisdom of Solomon but his loving kindness and tender mercies as follows ” The Emperor gave no indication or move toward terminating our visit, but after some forty-five minutes, I felt it proper to do so, and rose to my feet, expressing what an honor and delight the meeting had been. Then Haile Selassie presented me with an already auto- graphed full color photograph of himself, with a sterling silver frame, bearing his Imperial insignia centered over the top of the frame. Also, he gave me another duplicate photograph, (not autographed) for publication. Then I received a real surprise. Out of a beautiful leather case, handed him by an aide, the Emperor took an extremely beautiful gold bracelet which he presented to me AS HIS PERSONAL GIFT TO MY DAUGHTER, WHOM HE HAD EXPECTED TO BE WITH ME. In the center of the bracelet was a solid gold coin (24 karat), made 43 years ago in celebration of his coronation. The coin had the Emperor’s face engraved on it. The rest of the bracelet, except for the clasp at the underside, was 22 karat gold, with beautiful garlands engraved with exquisite craftsmanship. Jewelers have since evaluated it as THE FINEST GOLD BRACELET THEY HAD EVER SEEN.”
